Outreach Bible Study

Various churches use various methods when it comes to evangelism. And there are lots of materials that we can find in the field that talks about evangelism and almost all of them have its unique use and strategy. Top para-church organizations adopted their own materials for evangelism and discipleship. Campus Crusade for Christ uses the &ldquoFour Spiritual Laws&rdquo (4SL), other uses &ldquoRomans Road&rdquo (RR), and some uses the &ldquoEvangelism Explosion&rdquo (EE).

These materials and methods of evangelism are very useful and have proven its worth in the field. If used properly, these methods can be a powerful method for mass evangelism. But of course, every method has its own strengths and weaknesses as well as their limitations in the mission field.

Centering our context in the Philippines and to other countries that are predominantly Protestants and Catholics, there was a long term method that was used by most of the pastors, workers, and most missionaries. This is called the Outreach Bible Study. This method is not new, but perhaps the oldest and the most effective method that we can find there in the field.

Huh??? So what is OBS and how come I haven&rsquot heard about that?

Probably you have heard about the Outreach Bible Study or simply OBS but I assume if you are not familiar with the method, you just don&rsquot know that it is a method of evangelism. I believe that OBS is one of the oldest methods of evangelism that we can find there in the field. But it was not systematized as what we have today. The process however is still the same.

Describing OBS, OBS is simply conducting a Bible study in a certain house or group and making it an outreach of the church. There are only 4 VERY simple steps that we have to do in OBS.

Are you familiar now? Of course you are. Again, I believe that this method of evangelism is still the most effective method especially if you are looking forward to plant churches in the near future.

Outreach Bible Studies before have some differences in what we have today. We systematized OBS so that it will be more powerful and bear its fruits in the field. This is already proven and the most systematic approach that covers evangelism to church planting in our time.

Main strengths of OBS

OBS is a Bible centered material and method.
OBS is very simple to use. You don&rsquot have to be professional in order to learn OBS. Even those people who haven&rsquot finished elementary education can effectively learn and lead OBS.
OBS is cheap to use. You don&rsquot have to spend so many resources for the acquisition of materials. All you need in OBS are Bible and pen.
OBS is not only simple but very easy to use making it the most applicable method even for common people. The only requirement is the commitment to lead a Bible Study.
OBS is systematic making it more efficient compare to other methods. This method promotes quality massive evangelism.
OBS opens a way to start house churches. Starting a house church can be so tedious and very difficult to do. But OBS teaches us how to do it in simple terms. From personal experience, we can start a house church in less than 3 months period.
OBS encourage follow-ups. The main reason why most methods are not successful is because of the lack of follow-ups. OBS make sure that follow up should be implemented.
It answers the most question raised in the field concerning evangelism, discipleship, and church planting.

Is It Another Material?

Outreach Bible Study again is a Bible centered method. In the actual conducting of OBS, the leader will only use one material, the Bible. He doesn&rsquot need to use other Bible materials except for the source of authority, the Bible. This is what makes OBS a unique method. Other methods would need to use guide materials in order to conduct a Bible study. But OBS on the other hand only needs a New Testament Bible which is cheaper than all other materials.

Again, OBS is systematic, and because it is systematic, we are trying to make the presentation of the gospel as simple as possible to be understandable and acceptable to its hearers. Here are some of the characteristics that make Outreach Bible Study simple:

OBS only use one book in the Bible, Ephesians. This encourages the Bible Study group to read through the whole book of Ephesians without having difficulties in finding the verses.
OBS is a form of walk through the Bible process but with the inclusion of systematic presentation.
OBS is presented by making a systematic outline to make it presentable to the listener.
OBS promotes time frame of Bible Study process which makes it more systematic than all other Bible study methods. To complete our OBS program, we only have 8 meetings, 1 hour a week presentation of the gospel to our Bible Study group. That sums up to only 8 hours of Bible Study meetings.

What Are The Expectations After The OBS?

If it is systematic, time efficient, cost effective, and a powerful method certainly there are some expectations after the OBS is done.

After the OBS, the group is expected to have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior.
After the OBS, the group is expected to be attending the church or have started a house church.
After the OBS, the group is expected to be baptized.
After the OBS, the group is expected to be open for discipleship.
After the OBS and discipleship, the group is expected to ready for ministerial work.

Expectations number 1-4 are to wthiin the 2-2 ^1/2 month of work, while number 5 expectation is estimated to be of 6 months period.

Four Phases of OBS

Starting from leadership training, let us see how the OBS flow.

OBS Leadership Training. This is where it all starts. We train leaders to conduct OBS that promotes evangelism and establishing house churches.
Granted the Bible Study group came to church and have been a part of the body of Christ, or became a house church, the next set of training is teaching this group how to study and read their Bible and the most essential doctrinal stand.
The leader will then have to multiply himself through this group which means, teaching the same things that were taught to him in OBS Leadership Training. The OBS leader will have to teach the group how to lead the OBS and teach other people to follow Christ.
Continues training. The OBS leader will continue to be the disciple of his teacher and will continue to be the discipler of his OBS group. This means, he is both a disciple and a discpler in a continues process (in which most of this part will be from the discipleship methods).

Can We Really Do That In Such A Short

Period of Time?

For this question, I would answer a big &ldquoYES WE CAN&rdquo. We can definitely expect these results. Hear some of the feedbacks from our group of trainees.

And not only that, the methods that we use before needs a lot of memorization and mastery which makes them so tedious even after the training.
